Shearwater is a town on the north coast of Tasmania, Australia. It lies on the Rubicon Rivulet, just off Bass Strait, 19.6 km east of Devonport. The town of Port Sorell and Hawley Beach neighbour Shearwater. At the 2016 census, Shearwater had a population of 1764. The town grows considerably during the holiday season. It is part of the Municipality of Latrobe.

Shearwater is one of many popular holiday resorts along the north coast of Tasmania. In recent years the population has swelled and become one of the fastest-growing areas in the world; mainly due to affordable real estate and large developments in the area, including a shopping centre, the Port Sorell Golf Club, and the Shearwater Resort. It borders the Rubicon Estuary, which has been identified by Bird Life International as an Important Bird Area because of its importance for waders, especially pied oyster catchers.

Narawntapu National Park

Narawntapu’ s landscapes are diverse, including coastal heathlands and grasslands, wetlands and dry sclerophyll woodlands. This variety in turn attracts many bird species, including honeyeaters, green rosellas, black cockatoos, raptors, robins, wrens and fantails.

Freers Beach

Freers Beach curves from the southern rocks of Taroona Point for 1.7 km to the south, then southeast to the 500 m entrance of the more constricted inner entrance to the port. A road parallels the back of the beach, with several seawalls and groynes crossing the beach, including one at the southern end. It is usually calm, with a narrow, in places eroding, high tide beach. Intertidal sand flats extend up to 1 km into the port and at spring lows link with Penguin Island, 1.2 km offshore. A narrow coastal reserve and road back the beach, with a few houses behind the centre of the beach. The Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1986 and is located at the northern end of Freers Beach.

Port Sorell Jetty

“Wet a line” If you’re a keen angler, the Port Sorell Jetty is a local favourite. From Whiting to Flathead and Australian Salmon, the jetty is one of the area’s best spots to catch a wide range of fish.

Fairy Penguins The afternoon is the perfect time to experience Shearwater’s unique wildlife. Despite their size, Fairy Penguins are one of the region’s biggest attractions. With numerous tours available to book, get up close and personal with these little-feathered friends at Point Sorell where you can often catch sight of them waddling up the beach.
