Just west of Sorell is the Orielton Lagoon, a nature reserve with locally significant flora and fauna and migratory shorebirds that rest here on their international journeys.
Pitt Water – Orielton Lagoon is a wetland of international significance, recognised as both a Tasmanian Nature Reserve and an international Ramsar site. The wetland is bordered by the rural surrounds of Cambridge, Richmond, Penna and Orielton, whilst the townships of Midway Point and Sorell are adjacent to the wetland.
The wetland is home to many resident Tasmanian shorebirds and seabirds, including Australian Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers, Red-capped Plovers, Caspian terns and Silver, Kelp and Pacific Gulls.
Migratory birds such as the Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis), Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica), Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva) and Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis), can often be seen during the summer months.
